The Cherry Tree
The Cherry Tree By Ruskin Bond
The Cherry Tree is a touching story about a young boy named Rakesh who lives with his grandfather near a forest so he can attend school, while his parents remain in a village. One day, while returning from school, Rakesh eats some cherries and, inspired by his grandfather’s wisdom— “Nothing is lucky if you throw it away. If you want luck, you must put the seed to work” he plants a cherry seed in their garden. With his grandfather’s guidance, Rakesh begins to care for the seed, and soon it sprouts, bringing him immense joy. However, the journey of nurturing the tree is not without challenges. A goat eats its leaves, and later a woman cuts it down, causing even more damage. Despite these setbacks, the cherry tree shows remarkable resilience and continues to grow. Rakesh observes its progress closely, and one day he finds a praying mantis on its branches, followed by a hairy caterpillar. Knowing that caterpillars eventually turn into butterflies, he removes them to protect the plant. Over the years, the tree blossoms and bears fruit. Bees come to feed on its nectar, birds peck at its blossoms, and the tree continues to flower through spring, eventually yielding cherries. This story beautifully illustrates the importance of patience, perseverance, and hope. It teaches us that we must not give up in life, even when faced with difficulties. Just like the cherry tree, growth takes time and effort, and every season plays a vital role in shaping our journey. Planting a tree becomes a metaphor for nurturing dreams and investing in the future, reminding us that with care and resilience, even the smallest seed can flourish into something magnificent.
